520d n47 common problem.

    CKD AND CBU different?

    I am looking to purchase a 520d but not sure the different between the different of local CKD and imported cbu

    Quick look at the internet suggest that the 2l diesel engine of bmw, n47, has quite popular problem of timing chain problem.
    And it's difficult to change because need to dismantle the gearbox/transmission

    It's common to happen to have timing chain failure?

    How much does it cost to have egr + swirl flap delete?
    Does it have cat exhaust or just muffler only?

    If remove cat/dpf, require to remap? How much it costs?

    And cost to change timing belt before breakdown.

    What about its 8 speed transmission? Reliable?

    Single and twin turbo, got twin turbo failure?

    And the maintenance cost, can the engine runs on semi synthetic engine oil?

    Another alternative is e300 mercedes hybrid diesel. Can the hybrid convert to normal aircon pump?

    A : I have not seen a CBU (recond) unit.

    I am looking to purchase a 520d but not sure the different between the different of local CKD and imported cbu
    A : If you do find a CBU unit, then you better make sure it has more specs loaded into the car. F10 520d in overseas are fitted with DPF. Local model does not have DPF.

    A : Timing chain problem has not been seen with any local models. It has been seen with the local petrol versions though. I recommend that you go for an end 2013 and above which is a LCI unit.

    A : Answered above. Amongst my F10 group, no timing chain issues reported. Only seen on 2 units of petrol versions.

    How much does it cost to have egr + swirl flap delete?
    A : Cheap can be done during remap.

    Does it have cat exhaust or just muffler only?
    A : not sure to answer this part.

    If remove cat/dpf, require to remap? How much it costs?
    A : Yes, remap is about 1.5 to 1.8K depending on tuners. Aggressive tunes will make the car smoky.

    And cost to change timing belt before breakdown.
    A : For diesel, none has changed.

    What about its 8 speed transmission? Reliable?
    A : Its the best in the business as long its maintained well with oil changed every 100k km.

    Single and twin turbo, got twin turbo failure?
    A : Never heard of twin turbo failure on a diesel yet.

    And the maintenance cost, can the engine runs on semi synthetic engine oil?
    A : I am still servicing with BMW Oil others have used Millers and others.

    Another alternative is e300 mercedes hybrid diesel. Can the hybrid convert to normal aircon pump?
    A : Are you mad? the battery is RM120k to replace. Cannot convert.

    wanted to add on, amongst all the F10 models, the F10 520d are the least problematic of the lots. They are generally quite reliable. No regrets with my unit. Would go for G30 530d if it comes in. bored with 520d already.

    Even though mine's not a diesel.... hv to agree with this. Mileage per full tank is a dream for its petrol cousin. Bro, dont forget the F10 535d..... hehehehe
