View Full Version : Would you work for BMW?

I notice that there are a lot of very knowledgeable forumers on this board.. I find their knowledge on BMW cars are extremely good.. I wonder, if given the chance, would these guys work for BMW.. I don't know in what capacities, but surely BMW Malaysia in particular and BMW in general would love to have such individuals in their organizations? I mean, what kind of people does BMW hire anyway? If I were still young in the 20's and have so much knowledge about BMW cars and automotive engineering, I would definitely push for a job at BMW.. I read about this guys working for BMW in the US in M division and it sounded really interested.. He got out of college and went straight into BMW. Now after only 5 years in BMW, they assigned him in M division.. What a dream job for a petrolhead!
So, all the "petrolhead" forumers, why don't you apply for a job at BMW and put your talents to good use?

Knowing about cars is all about intrest and passion, Selling is an art. Cutomers buy same product for different reasons. Novelty is one of them.
So not all cut for Sales Job.. at least not me...

Well, i never said anything about a sales job.. You can do many other functions at BMW besides sales. Besides, sales jobs are done by BMW dealers like AB, Cartrade, etc, not BMW itself.. Surely there are positions in R&D, PR, logistics, etc in BMW.. also, doesn't have to be BMW Malaysia.. BMW wants to have big presence in Asia, that's one of their main objectives.. This is a plus for us Asians..
For me at least, for people passionate about BMW, working for BMW in technical posts would be the ultimate job.. even PR jobs wouldn't be too far off, since you get to talk BMW all day! You've already done that anyway on this forum!

well, i never said that it has to be sales jobs. besides, BMW doesn't do its own sellling in M'sia anyway. Its dealers are doing that for it here. The jobs I'm talking about are in R&D, tech support, PR, etc. Surely they have such posts here in M'sia and regionally. BMW wants to be big in Asia and I'm sure they need technical strong people with BMW cars knowledge and passion to fill these posts. If I'm one of such people, it'll be a dream job to work in the R&D dept! PR job wouldn't be too far off as well, since you get to talk about BMW all day.. Most of us are already doing this anyway on this forum.. Why not do it for BMW officially and get paid for it while you're at it?!

I think they already had someone in that position already. Test driver? Probably wont qualify as they normally take in some ex formula or DTM drivers!

Al, with yr tech knowledge, i'm sure they can find some interesting post for you. doesn't have to be in Malaysia as well.. you must've already enjoyed yr current job.. a lot of $$$??
anyway, me personally, would love to work for them had i the tech knowledge.. i used to be passionate about my job, but after 12 yrs, it gets a bit boring already.. but too late to change career because i don't know anything else but oil & gas engineering.. and the money is pretty good as well.. so, guess i'm stuck..

My knowledge of BMW is so so only. Maybe after the next modding exercise will be a little better :nyehehe: :nyehehe:
But yes, a little too late to change jobs now, but hey if I am fresh grad I would not mind joining them, probably as a F1 engine technician or something. Then come back to M'sia and set up your own workshop, specializing in Motorsport! Sure get plenty of petrol heads:nyehehe: :nyehehe: :nyehehe:

You can also work with their regional data center (if you can find a job). One of our previous forum member joined the data center operation and enjoyed some of the previleges of driving some of the M cars while in Munich on assignment.
I have thought about joining them but the opportunity didn't come along so I stick to my current job.

juggernaut,
I think I am rite to say that there's no R&D dept here for BMW Malaysia so it's end of the road there. They do have a technical dept which handles all the technical support for their approved dealers etc. They basically act as the middlemen to the HQ and relate all upgrades/complaints/resolutions back & forth. I guess that's the closest you can get to a R&D job for the moment.....
Bundy, test driver ah? The real test drivers although very skilled are also very technical people and have to follow a very precise set of tests which can be very repetitive - boring. I think they do spend a fair amount of time reporting on the tests as well. We all have a vision that test drivers zoom at breakneck speed all the time but actually the product development/proving/testing/evaluation is mostly done at speeds the general public drives! Of course, there will be interesting tests to do as well.....ie. top speeds & accelerations/braking!
Having said all that, I would not mind being a test driver for their Racing Department, this I can tell you though.
Sadly, age catching up and no talent also....so how? he he!
Cheers!

well, like i said, we don't have to be constrained by geography.. thus don't need to be just BMW M'sia.. surely if anyone qualifies, BMW would consider sending him wherever he's needed..
It would depend on the job i guess. I certainly wouldnt want to be a junior sales person or clerk.

My brother-in-law is a sales manager in BMW Malaysia whilst a childhood/family acquaintance (my younger brother's school-mate) is the Product Planning & Pricing Manager in BMW Malaysia. They both enjoy their jobs very much and get to travel all over the world to drive various models of BMW.
My brother-in-law has a company car which comprise of different BMW models (it could be a 325i this week and a 530d next week or a Z4 the week after...)!
I envy the 2 of them and often wonder what it would have been like if I had applied to BMW for a job (I'm now too entrenched in my present profession and can't just up and go).

I was pleasantly surprised to see a maroon E46 being drifted at the second drift event @ Proton. Then I was not at all surprised when they announced that it was piloted by none other than Roland Ooi.
For those not old enough, Mr. Ooi was a successful racer back in the 80s and early 90s. His contemporaries were Kan Chee Hong and Ron Lim.
Well, tyke, shouldn't you get your uncle to take out the Z4, put on the club plates and roll down to the Ultimate TT?

Was told the sales staff get a very miserable basic - something like under a thou per month, but per car sold is from 3 thou up or something like that...
And also that if u'd just joined them, they'll pay u 3 or 4 thou per month for the first 3 or 6 mths or until yr first sale... sort of like a warming up period...
This what i heard about AB... donno how true it is...
