I went to the Ford Autofair with my friends, tested the 1.8 & 2.0 Focus. Left the showroom thoroughly disappointed, the famed Focus multi-link suspension totally let down by the lame auto gearbox, which is unresponsive and a pain to drive.

So we headed to the Subaru showroom across the Federal Highway. Firstly, the sales team leader there is first rate. His knowledge of cars (not just Subaru) is good, unlike most salesmen in the Sime Darby group (including those at the Ford showroom).

So we took the Legacy GT out for a spin. It's a 2.0 turbo with 245ps and 310Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed auto gearbox.

Being only in a mild state of tune, it's a very understated car, and you won't hear any blow-off valve or loud exhaust. But once you press the throttle, boy the car goes!

Going uphill is a stitch, esp in sports mode, and the handling is good thanks to the AWD and the position of the boxer engine. I thoroughly enjoyed the drive.

Interior wise, it's not bad but nothing to shout about like the Audi. The ICE is good though, being a McIntosh system with 10 speakers.

It's a practical executive sedan, so you can't really compare to a Mk V Golf GTi, which is cheaper and also very powderful. At around RM250,000, it would be a car I would buy over a E90 320i, unless you are really image conscious.

Apparently if you can drive the Legacy sedately, you can get 12l/100km, which is what I was getting in the E34 525i. But you don't get the extra kick in the butt at 3,000rpm from an E34!

the Legacy GT is a superb car..if Subaru chassis concept is anything to go by,this car shud be a belter!! pity it only comes in auto guise.what i'd give to have a 6speed manual in the GT.
love all things Subaru!!!

symmetrical 4WD. :ok:

Yeah baby. Known as Subaru Liberty Down Under, I've been in one owned by a Subaru Club member (no. plate MYGT88). His ride has been souped up to almost 300BHPs and his SATNAV has built-in speed detector as well. Damn cool...it warns him of possible speed traps from a distance of about 500m and can be set easily. The special SATNAV system get be bought for around $800.

The sound system is superb. Fully specs and is much more value for money compared to the E90. maintenance is also cheaper. Will definitely consider getting one ....oops.....maybe I better stick to beemers lah. Hahah.... it's around A$60k for the top of the range model.

Its a great car, but too bad the Legacy costs quarter mil. The styling is a bit long in the tooth too. According to MI, the new 2.5 Impreza WRX and Forrester is going to come in at that level too. Lovely to know that the WRX goes for under S$100k with COE in Singapore.

that's the damnest thing about brand new Subarus in Malaysia..they are priced too high to be attractive cuz of the availability of grey imports that are more powerful and cheaper to boot..
i don't mind paying just below rm200k for the GT but at rm266k its just a bit too much to swallow..

Oh yeah, the Legacy is one sweet ass car!

I had an extended test drive of it over 2 sessions, and it's so bloody quick and sure footed! Much quicker than the 330, I reckon.

Ultimate Q-car, plus there are only like, what, 6, on the roads?

Definitely a car for the rich and stealthy.

I think the auto suits the car well, though, as it has obviously been designed with a small turbo for instant response and low down urge.

supergripen,

you mean MI brings in the Legacy 2.0GT too? I've got a quote from one of the PI for RM246k for a '05 model. Didnt know the price tag was so hefty and I thought of going for a 2.0 GT spec-B... sigh....

yup they do..but as u know, the price tag is waaay hefty.especially when the newly announced CKD 325i e90 costs only about rm30k more.

had an encounter with a LGT once, after a bit of redlining in step mode,i gave up chase cuz it was pointless.the LGT was much faster, more agile and the way she just scoots off is something that needs to be seen to be believed.

performance wise,it'll give the 325i e90 a good run.. but given a choice between the two,i'd be dumbfounded to decide.

hopefully the next LGT will have a 2.5 boxer with a 6speeder.. with 320bhp potential,it'll be a belter.wouldn't mind paying a bit more..

But what about after-sales service for the Legacy in Malaysia...?

Motor Image provides that in Malaysia and Singapore.from what i've heard, they're pretty good.although small in numbers, the Subaru community is very well served.and they remain exclusive due to their small numbers.

my friends came up to Penang and I drove his Legacy wagon around for two days straight. Boy I was impressed with it..... Only if it had slightly more power... yummie..

With after-sales service being taken care of, it would seem that the LGT is a viable alternative to a garden-variety E90...

mind u,Motor Image is only available in KL and Penang.or u can crossover to Singapore.if u live elsewhere,it'll be a long drive to ur service centre.this is due to the small volumes that they sell here in Malaysia,so not many SCs around as yet.

but unlike AB,they are pretty good at satisfying the customers.and parts are reasonable as well.

once again, due to the small number of Subarus on Malaysian roads, exclusivity is guaranteed.

After all this while, just bought me the Sub. Legacy GT Sedan 2.0 Turbo.
Yes no regrets after about 3000 km in a month.

Thanks for yr comments guys.

By the way, mine is the 6th registered in Malaysia, there are 2 remaining Silver models in stock after which supposedly they wont import any more sedans. I saw the 2008 models in S'pore, but no regrets with this model. Just what I want.

This after previously driving the Subaru 2005 Outback in Canada 2004-2005. Driving on ice on that was great, though only normally aspirated.

But now I commute East Coast to KL in 3.5 hrs !!!

And oh!, another thing, the price is now down to 200K without insurance......

Driving in monsoon downpours on the East Coast Highway will never be the same again !

Does the 2.0 model comes with sportshift?

yup..other than the Spec B 6speed manual, the Legacy GT comes with Prodrive's Sportshift 5speed tiptronic auto.

having driven the car a few times,i feel the car is a bit 'underbraked'..an upgrade in that department will be very very beneficial.otherwise, the car is simply perfect.almost bought one mind u.

hey, im in the US. my girlfriend has a sweet ass 05Legacy 2.5 GT Limited. only 30k were made here. everything is from the STI. it has 300 hp/tq. the car is so quick. its slap shift too. i have smoked a Lexus IS350.she has smoke a Porsche Cayenne Turbo and plenty of Golf GTi's and R32's. it handles sooo sweet. there is so many 6 speeds for sale here for like 15k with 40k miles. i was going to buy one but id rather have an STI or a GTO. but AWD turbo carsare sweet rides!
