found on the net.

Actually , the M is a multiplyingfactor for parts and repair costs. M3s have to multiply the costs fora standard 3-series repair by 3, M5 owners by 5 and so on. This is why the fabled M8 wasn't very popular - too many potential owners
dropped dead at the thought of repair costs. The M1s are in a special
price category by themselves since most of their parts are made from a
rare earth element - unobtainium.

I got another one. This one more on the engine prefix that happens to be M as well but applies to all BMWs.

M20 engine lots cheaper in parts and labour to fix. ie 20% of your total year maintenance budget for each fix.

M50 engine will take 50% of your yearly budget per fix!. More than twice more expensive. I got one of each, and very shocked to compare the price difference in parts alone!. Sure common parts cost the same but engine specific parts are unique to each engine.

M= Money pit. Germans called it motoyern, so going Euro from the Mark makes everything more expensive for all non-Europeans!.
