View Full Version : New VW Golf GTi

Test drove the new VW Golf GTi - what a car! 2.0 FSi engine with turbo, 200bhp & 280Nm of torque, best of all - 6 speed DSG!
Interior wise, not like the new Audi A4 but no worse than the E90. Rear space is good, again no worse than the E90. Boot space, maybe the E90 is better as it is a sedan.
The Golf's power delivery is smooth, no hint of the turbo. The DSG is EXCELLENT - just floor the pedal and upshift - no jerking like the Alfa's sillispeed. Brakes - GREAT -love the firmness of the brake feel and awesome stopping power.
Best of all? The price - RM225,000 for the Wald Golf GTi (DSG, 18" rims with Bridgestone Potenza RE050 tires!) v RM268,000 for the 320i (Auto, 16" rims). You won't get better value if you are looking for a European car.
Tuning potential - plenty! With those 400bhp Golfs and Audi A4 in the US, plenty of tuning products will be available.........
All in all, worth a serious consideration.

Didchu go with the other 2 forummers who're contemplating getting the new Golf GTi??? Wah! Looks like mass defection man! Pricing seems very attractive given the 120i is even more expensive at RM229K and only has puny 150 bhp.... :dunno:

Just change the badge back lor.....like getting a Skoda, then take out all the Skoda badges to put VW badges, same with Toyota --> Lexus :P
Yeah, JPB, I went with the 2 fella ;) It was a nice drive, really impressed. The only good thing going for the 1 series is its RWD platform so the mad mods potential are greater - V8, turbo M3 engine, etc etc

What I like most is the "bloopping" sound of the exhaust every time you upshift, so similar to F1 cars, and the rear wheels spin each time the throttle is floored. IT'S BETTER THAN SEX! :yahoo:

The Toureg was on display too. Comes with 6 pot calipers on the front!

And the price of the 3.2V6 Toureg is just slightly higher than the e90 325i. I wish the Toureg comes with the DSG tranny as well, just like the Audi TT 3.2 V6 :lazy: :lazy:  :D

All i can say is nice, very nice. Only gripe i have is the dash. Meters are retro so nice but the center console a bit plain jane. If only they did it like the new A3 which also shares the same engine & dsg trans.

Just tested the tuned up WALD 240hp GTI at their Chan Sau Lin showrooon, the increase in hp is noticeable from lower gear, once it's on the move the difference is not so obvious. I floored the throttle when exiting a U turn, the front lost traction a bit & I could see some lights flashing between the dials (must be the ESP lights).............and yes the "blooping" noise is still when upshifting! :yahoo:

Not yet, the "loud-talking-know-nothing" salesman has not confirmed the price, still waiting.
BTW, the 240 hp GTI I've tested this morning was used as a pace car in the a track event in SIC last Sat........as informed by the salesman or course. It has lots of loud stickers on it.

Does the GTi comes with LSD? Or are they just relying on electronics to keep the wheelspin in check?
Jules
05-03-2005, 01:54 PM
240hp on the front wheels......would be fun to see it in the rain! I expect lots of front wheel spinning but little forward motion - dunno how much traction control can help in this regard! ( cos front tyre grip is still the MAIN equation here )

My, my, all this high praise for the GTi. The only reason why they made it so good was directly due to the Civic R, Focus RS and other 200hp plus hatches. Otherwise, they'd probably continue trying to live off the "original" GTI tag (which belongs to the Alfasud, actually) while passing off overweight uninspired crap (see MK IV GTI especially, which was even blasted by the Yanks of all people!)
Why don't you guys test drive an EP3 or DC5 R also lah....
no doubt the EP3 or DC5 would be more capable cars around the track. but can they lap in as much style as the GTI?
really the car is lovely. we had a surprise visitor this past weekend at the IA ulu yam run. how can u not think she's pretty?! :ok:

But the 1-series is meant to take on the Golf. In fact, it's the primary target! But there's no way even the 120d can match the GTi for now. It's time for an M1 but will it be priced at RM225K? Ha ha!

Well, it depends on a few factors. If you are comparing the E90 330i then of course, you have a better car in terms of hp but not necessarily in drivability and the FUN factor! But then the 330i costs RM400k, which is almost double the price of the GTI. Then as JPB said, its head on competitor should be the 1 series, which if you really do compare them, the GTi will annihilate the 1 series alive

Well, many ppl speak so highly of the 1-series' platform or chassis on track and twisties etc. I drove the 120i b4 and it has great potential for a fun hot hatch car but the 2.0 valvetronic is gonna feel like its stationary in an all out drag with GTi. Yet the 120i already cost RM229K. So, in terms of BMW's attempt to take market share from the Golf market, it has absolutely failed in Malaysia where the competition's top end model is priced far more attractively. Embarassingly, it's now the other way round!

I saw the new GTi going up the bangsar hill and it looks stunning in Red! OMG!!
Still RM230-260k for the GTi is a BIG decision to spend on the VW marque. Other considerations should be the acclaimed WRX STi in its full glory from Naza. Lovely looking ride as well and should be much quicker than the GTi with the lovely flat four loping away and you rumble down the street. :P

Ya, true as well that the GTi (non DSG) is priced way below the WRX STi. Also its a hot hatch GTi class instead of a AWD sedan. However, once you are in cars like the boyracer GTi or Civic R etc you will attract a few interesting cars on the road stuck behind you tail when you least expect it. It'll be a shame to pull over for the WRX STi, or Mitsu Evo VII/VIII once you are playing in the boy racer league heh.
Thats the nice thing about the BMW 3 series (non M of course). Playing in different league and it doesnt feel as shameful pulling over for the modded Vtec/Mivec/Turbo/Supercharged boy racer "tionging" you if it ever happens :)

Yeah right... Last I heard you didn't move out of the way of that black Integra sneaking up your tail. In fact, you gave it quite a fight in 3rd b4 pretending to turn. With the Golf GTi, you shouldn't need to pull over for an Integra....

I saw Comedy Club once, man those guys are a rip as well. Very crude and quite dirty jokes, but damm funny.

Test drove both the 200 bhp and 240 bhp GTI today. All I can say is the VW GTI has finally returned - and with a vengeance! Not since I drove a BBR Turbo GTI in the early eighties has there been a GTI that has recaptured the spirit of the original, with doses of horses to boot. Well it may never be as light as the early GTIs, but the sharp handling and the awesome power certainly compensates.
But by far the most impressive for me is the DSC gearbox. Forget tiptronic, selespeed or SMG. I'm not sure if there is a significant weight penalty when compared to the other boxes, but it certainly feels as smooth as any auto, yet changes faster than you can ever manage in a manual. And with those convenient mini paddles to actuate the gear changes behind the steering, you're that much closer to the F1 experience without the sensitivity of a flyweight flywheel. The other boxes seem ancient by comparison.
My grouses? The central console area could do with the same aluminium trimmings that appear elsewhere, and the seats could benefit from leather treatment. And what about the resale value in years to come?
To sum, the excitement element is definitely top order, yet docile enough in auto mode for city crawling. Just make sure you budget for the 18" rubber which would not last more than 5000km at the front if you drove the way I drove today! :D

The test car comes with Bridgestone Potenza RE050 tyres which has a treadware index of 140 only (half of normal tyres which usually comes within the 260-320 range). These are "trick" tyres and comes OE in the Lotus Elise in Europe, not available in Malaysia!
esterix, yah, that "tartan" interior has to GO! nothing some nice recaros in black leather and red stitching can't cure, i'm sure. :D

You havent really driven a Golf GTi unless you corner on 3 wheels and go WHUMP on the exit.
(GTi affectionados will know what i mean).
hehehehe 3er, ur rite there! i wonder if the new Mk5 lifts a wheel as well. i remember the track marshalls telling me that they thought i was going to flip my car when they saw the inside rear lifting as i was attacking the turns in my Golf3 GTI VR6. i just told them it was normal. :D

hi, here is my view of the gti..
interior is audi standard (the previous gen a4 i've sit in).. looks like it would last..! passenger and boot space is respectable.. look's wise, i think it doesnt look as appealing as the cooper-s or the 1-series.. (but i'd still don mind having one for free..). four-door is definitely a plus compared to cooper-s.. btw, (no flaming intended) why compare to e90? i cant see any basis except the similar price range with the 318i, then it's also acceptable to compare with wrx or even evos.. hehe..
speedo cluster in blue looks really nice, but nothing special. steering is momo-like, excellent!! shift pedals quite small and stiff.. bucket seat is purposeful, though the chequered cloth is a major turn-off (for me at least).. rims similar to alfa's, would be greater with a set of superlegra or some sort... red-painted calliper looks somewhat awkward when coupled with 'small' rotors..
drive? yet to test.. cancelled twice.. just hope it would handle as well as the cooper-s or the 1-series at least.. but i bet it'd still be very, very good if not great!! then again, what is great?
hopefully can drop by tomorrow after work.. anyone getting one? what's the best deal around?
