Anyone tried or tested the new S40 2.4l? Seems to be a viable alternative to the entry level 3 series considering that the price is significantly lower than the latter.
Any thoughts on that?

I totally agree. Saw the cool foreign advert at Discovery Channel the other day. This car looks handsome and got a nice powerplant to boot. Summore, safe like a tank. If only I can forsake my hiaw-ing escapades!

Just did some internet research. It's going for RM191K. The 2.4L turbo churns out 170 bhp and 230 Nm of torque, which is very respectable. With 5-speed geartronic, it can sprint to 100 kmh in 8.9 secs, ohhhh... respectable! Reviews seem to indicate the car to be more refined and a better handler than S60!! Quality of trims was praised too. I like the interior. It's neat and funky! Then... if compared to E90's 320i going for RM300K, it makes a lot of sense to go for the Volvo, hehe!
I tested it when it first came to our shores.
My impression is as follows:
External styling is attractive and is very much inline with their current model. Sometime you can mistake them.
There are some model styling touches in the interior. The seats are comfortable with a decent rear space. I am especially horrified at the brick hard upper door trim.
Drive was a little harder than the S60. But very sporty and handles very well. It is very chuckable and the engine is very responsive. Even the sales person's eyeballs almot poped out when I did my traffic weaving antics on the mahameru highway.
Conclusion, the S40 can give the E46 a good run for the money, especially at that price. I am not so sure of its long distance capability though.

Then, it's really good value for money considering for that price, you can only get a 118i with deplorable cheap plasticky interior quality! Summore, its NCAP 5-star! I think it's long distance capability should be very good too considering its a solid and refined car. Somehow, the S40 has incorporated a lot of improvements to deal with S60's weaknesses! It's also a 5-potter, so an E90 320i or E46 318i valvetronic don't make much sense for so much more in dough....
Somehow, chatting a hot chick into checking out my Vulva, ooops! sorry, Volvo is just something I may have to live with, heh!

Ahhh..... Yes the S40. Nice. But as a 3 series alternative I don't think so. The more power it has, the worse it will handle. All that power and torque driving the front wheels will make sure you go very very fast in a straight line even when you really want to turn. Same goes for all the T Series super Volvos as well. T for major Torque steer. At least Audi has the good sense to do Quattro with their more powerful cars. Something Volvo needs to do to really scare a proper 3 series. My dua sen.

Yup, that the major drawback... I'm still wondering about the S60R that killed the BMWs, Porsches and Ferrari enroute to Ulu Yam. Is that a rear or four wheel drive cos I understand the Volvo did some serious killing on the twisty bits too. In black it looks stunning. I always kena tiong by this black S60T5 on Jalan Damansara with a single-digit plate. Damn stress man cos he's stunningly quick!!

Maybe he has 285/30/19 tires in front and 225/45/17 at the back to even things out. :D

JP, the Volvo S60R that killed all those guys abovementioned is an AWD. Pulling about 300hp. That is stock standard. With abit of mods and etc... you can be pulling around the region 350-370hp conservatively with no compromise.

300 bhp on stock! Wa! Awesome, but handling is good?

Thanks. Those kinda stats are quite awesome! Question is, how much does it cost? If less than RM500K, would anyone consider getting this over an E90 330i or E46 M3, heh!

My partner got his S40 2.4 last week bought during the 45years anni. promo.
Doen't feel that powerful despite 5 cylinder and 170bhp under its bonnet.
He gets 1.7X% interest 5 year loan....that's really good.
I'm still thinking of getting that XC90 to replace my E39..soon.

Just got the S40 for my wife. No doubt it is not comparable for the 325. But for 189K, it is definitely more value for money than the 320i. I think
So guys, compared to 99 36 vs S40 - which would you be more inclined? In terms of after sales service and reliability.

FYI, the Volvo S60R as mentioned is not available in M'sia. The one at Ulu Yam probably 60T5 with R badge. But yesterday I saw one ori' 60R at Maran, pahang. I was told he brought in from UK. T5 is powerful and R is more powerful. so dont play2

Unfortunately the lengthy replies and explanations given by those present to this particular outing were lost with the last server crash. Bottom line is racing on public roads is simply unacceptable, and for a 300hp wannabe trying to prove a point by overtaking on the dirt road on the left, then causing the convoy to take drastic measures to avoid an accident doesn't make the nuisance a good driver.
The Porsches and Ferraris were 400+ hp each, and a couple of them were driven by seasoned campaigners at Sepang. Go figure...

That was sure one hot albeit entertaining discussion. I echoed Esterix's sentiment. Nothing to prove on public roads!! :)

bmwleg, the Volvo S60 T5R is the real deal. It is a Singapore car. Agreed there is none brought in by Volvo Malaysia.
Yes the Ulu Yam Urban Legend was as real as it can be. I was there and witnessed part of it. If they were really taking a leasuirely drive then we should not be hitting 190kmh on the trunk road. Let's lay the urban legend to rest.
The car is as good as the driver at the end of the day be it Sepang or otherwise.
Unless you were actually there during the Ulu Yam drive please do not add your salt and pepper as though you were there. I rest my case.

No need think too much. Yes, S40 2.4 is awesome can do many fitting kits.. But it is non-turbo version mah.. Maybe after 2yr old u will get boring thats not success your feeling... Why not consider V50 T5 AWD with 220HP... Price reasonable less than RM230K mah... This car sure never regret once you take back home... :D
Considering the s40 and waja sharing the same platform and the latter does not have a nacp rating where the former had 5, I'll ditch it. Look at s80 or a 3 series is more of a viable option.

FYI The older S40 shares the same platform as the Waja and in Europe, the Mitsubishi Carisma. Both the old S40 and Carisma are discontinued and Proton bought that outdated (as usual ) platform for the Waja. The newer S40 shares the same platform as the new Ford Focus and a few other cars within the Ford Group.

my friend bindablitz,
FYI Volvo Malaysia doesn't bring in S60T5R and S60R. 60T5R in fact only for sale in USA. The nearest 60R only and solely for S'pore market. In M'sia they only sell T5 version. Eventhough I'm not at Ulu Yam but those 2 S60T5 chaps is my friend and they no nonsense but only my M5 can beat them
Past rides:
1980Alfa Berlina-now sold
1981 Alfetta-now sold
1982 Alfa GTV6
1990 BMW 320i-now sold
1994 BMW 328i-now sold
1998 BMW M5
2004 Volvo S60T5
2007 Volvo V50T5

bmwleg, you are absolutely right. They are no S60T5R in Malaysia. The S60T5R is from Singapore. I see you are a volvo t5 fan. drove it several times during its launch way back in 2001. the power is nothing short of addictive.

ermmm so easy if you want to makesure the different of R-Type... For S60T5 prefer in Automatic/shiftronic gearbox and S60T5R was 6-speed Manual... Yes, only Singapore available but not sure in Malaysia maybe got one, there will not easy to show off any of the club... If here got somebody from JPJ officer easy to trace it.. :))
